When do I intervene?
Intervention is a cooperative decision that I make with the mother. If she wishes to have a minimum of interventions, I seek to honor that. Otherwise, I tend to manage labor aggressively to shorten the duration of the birthing process for both mother and baby.
What is my approach to pain management?
I individualize pain management according to the mother’s wishes and the progress of the labor. It is a team decision made by the mother, nursing staff, and myself.
How do my patients describe me?
My patients describe me as being compassionate and caring. They also feel I am knowledgeable and thorough and that I take the time to hear their concerns and answer their questions. During the birthing process, I try to allow flexibility and seek to make each birth a positive experience. Mothers feel I am calm and supportive during labor and delivery.
Why do I practice obstetrics?
Delivering babies is one of the most exciting and rewarding aspects of practicing medicine. Each birth is a miracle. I consider it an honor when families allow me to be involved with them in this special event in their lives. I am also at the point in my career when I have been able to deliver babies for mothers who I delivered earlier in my career. I enjoy OB so much that my current plan is to continue delivering babies as long as I practice medicine.
